Toyota bragged about avoiding recall
Detroit News David Shepardson wrote that an internal Toyota document bragged about saving $100 million by lobbying Washington to avoid a full recall of the Camry, Tacoma, Lexus ES, and other cars. In 2007, Toyota officials were able to negotiate the recall down to replacing 55,000 floor mats, apparently for the same issue that eventually led to numerous fixes (now including replacing more floor mats, adding override systems, and making changes to or replacing the pedals.) Over 2,000 complaints have been received for the sudden acceleration, with 34 deaths allegedly linked to them.
